Hiring: Maryland Racing Commission Veterinarian

Job Summary:
The Maryland Racing Commission veterinarian is responsible for overseeing the health and well-being of horses participating in races at Maryland racetracks. This position involves conducting pre-race examinations, monitoring horses during races, and ensuring compliance with state regulations regarding equine health and medication. The salary range for this position is $120,000-$135,000.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct thorough pre-race examinations of all horses entered to race, assessing their fitness and health status.
  2. Monitor horses during races and post-race for any signs of distress or injury.
  3. Collect and process biological samples for drug testing in accordance with established protocols.
  4. Maintain accurate and detailed medical records for all examined horses.
  5. Advise the stewards on matters related to equine health and recommend scratches when necessary.
  6. Oversee the implementation and enforcement of medication rules and regulations.
  7. Investigate and report on any incidents of animal cruelty or neglect at racetracks.
  8. Collaborate with track management, trainers, and owners to promote best practices in equine care and welfare.
  9. Participate in continuing education to stay current with advances in veterinary medicine and racing regulations.

Qualifications:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an accredited institution
  • Active license to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Maryland
  • Graduate or experience in equine veterinary medicine
  • Thorough knowledge of horse racing regulations and medication rules
  • Strong diagnostic and decision-making skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and make quick, informed decisions
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays
  • Must maintain HIWU (Horseracing Integrity and Welfare Unit) certification

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for extended periods and move quickly in emergency situations
  • Capable of lifting and manipulating equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Comfortable working around large animals in various weather conditions

This position requires a dedicated professional committed to upholding the highest standards of equine health and racing integrity in Maryland's horse racing industry.
